Back Surgery

When complex spine conditions require surgery, our expert surgeons use the most advanced techniques in the field to safely and effectively fix the problem. For example, in a discectomy, very small incisions are used to remove a herniated or degenerated disc, which is then replaced with a bone graft or substitute.

Surgeons use St. Mary’s state-of-the-art operating rooms with advanced equipment, such as a nerve monitoring system that gives surgeons continuous feedback in real time to avoid injury to the nerves.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

While conventional back surgery is sometimes necessary, there are now a greater number of options for minimally invasive procedures, which uses a less disruptive side approach that enables patients to recover more quickly.

Computer-assisted technology and highly specialized cameras and instrumentation enable surgeons to correct back and spine problems through smaller incisions. These sophisticated cameras let the surgeon view and access the affected area of the spine through a “keyhole” incision.

Benefits of minimally invasive spine surgery may include:
  • Less post-operative pain
  • Less soft tissue/muscle damage
  • Quicker recovery and return to activities
  • Smaller scars/less scar tissue
  • Reduced blood loss
  • Reduced risk of infection
  • Shorter hospital stay
  • Improved function
