No matter who you are, nutrition plays an important role in your health. For growing kids, older adults, those with chronic illnesses or recovering from surgery, nutrition is especially important.
Dieticians at SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital Jefferson City and St. Mary's Hospital Audrain provide nutrition education and advice to help patients live a healthy lifestyle.
Nutritional services are offered at the following SSM Health Mid-Missouri locations:
- Dietitians commonly provide medical nutrition therapy and guidance to inpatients with:
- Chewing and/or swallowing difficulties
- Non-healing wounds
- Poor appetites due to various issues
- A new cardiac stent or who have undergone recent cardiac surgery
- Trouble maintaining a healthy weight
- Food allergies/intolerances
- Chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, congestive heart failure or celiac disease
- The need for alternative nutrition support, such as tube feeding or total parenteral nutrition
Nutrition services at the hospital require a physician's referral. Ask your nurse or physician if you are interested.
Dietitians see patients on an outpatient basis for a multitude of reasons, some of them listed above. If you think you may benefit from visiting with a dietitian, discuss it with your physician. A physician order is required in order to see a dietitian and can easily be obtained.
You or your physician may call SSM centralized scheduling at 573-681-3181 to make an appointment.
St. Mary's Hospital dietitians are involved in many community activities. They frequently visit local schools to teach students and staff about healthy eating habits. They teach a monthly outpatient cardiac nutrition class to the participants undergoing cardiac rehabilitation. They serve as dietetic preceptors for both the coordinated program of dietetics at the University of Missouri and the local Department of Health.
This summer, SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital is teaming up with the Jefferson City Area YMCA's LiveStrong program. LiveStrong is a research-based physical-activity and well-being program designed for adult cancer survivors. St. Mary's Hospital dietitians will provide nutrition assessments on each participant and conduct a presentation during each of the three 12-week sessions of this program. For information on LiveStrong, call 573-761-3225 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
