SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital – Jefferson City earns awards for patient safety and excellence from Healthgrades

​​​SSM Health St. Mary's Hospital – Jefferson City is one of only two hospitals in the state and the only one in Jefferson City to receive two patient-focused awards from Healthgrades, a leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals. The hospital earned both the 2016 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ and the 2016 Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™.

Patient Safety Excellence Award recipients were determined by evaluating the occurrence of observed incidents and expected performance for 14 Patient Safety Indicators as defined by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).

In 2016, there were 466 hospitals across the nation that achieved the Healthgrades Patient Safety Excellence Award™. The distinction places this elite group of hospitals within the top 10% of all hospitals evaluated for their excellent performance in safeguarding patients from serious, potentially preventable complications during their hospital stays.

On average, 270,457 patient safety events could have been avoided if all hospitals, as a group from 2012 to 2014, performed similarly to hospitals performing better than expected on each of 13 patient safety indicators evaluated by Healthgrades, as well as zero instances of foreign object left during procedure.

Outstanding Patient Experience Award recipients were identified through an evaluation of 10 patient experience measures, using data collected from a 32-question HCAHPS survey of the hospital's own patients. The survey questions focus on patients' perspectives of their care during their inpatient hospital stay.

There were 448 recipients that achieved the 2016 Healthgrades Outstanding Patient Experience Award™, representing the top 15% of hospitals in the nation for patient experience. Healthgrades evaluated 3,858 hospitals that submitted patient surveys to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), covering admissions from April 2014 – March 2015.​
